Maritime Training

INTRODUCTION

The set up of the NPCC (Sea) Unit is similar to that of the existing NPCC (Land) Units in their organisational structures, memberships and functions. However, NPCC (Sea) Unit cadets are put through a unique training programme where approximately 50% are dedicated to maritime-based training.

Recruitment of cadets for the NPCC (Sea) units started in January 2002 and two units were launched on 15 January 2003 together with the ground-breaking ceremony for the Loyang Regional Base. In January 2011, Edgefield Secondary School has been commissioned as an NPCC Sea unit with 42 cadets. As of today, we have in total three units. The other two units are Springfield Secondary School and Raffles Girls' School (Secondary).

  • Ropework on knots, bends, hitches, lashings and splicing
  • Life saving appliances and its uses
  • Fire Fighting appliances and its uses
  • Collision Avoidance Regulations (ROR)
  • Boat Handling
  • Survival at Sea
  • Rafting
  • Emergencies at Sea

BASIC COASTAL NAVIGATION
  • Compass Reading
  • Read, Understand & Interpret Chart Symbols, Abbreviation & Terms.
  • Identify the salient features of the nautical chart
  • Chartwork-plotting position using geographical grid, compass bearings & Range and Bearing.
  • Measuring distance on the nautical chart
  • Understanding the Maritime Buoyage System

MARITIME COMMUNICATION - INTERNATIONAL CODE OF SIGNALS
  • International Code of Signals
  • Flag Signalling
  • Light Signalling
  • Sound Signalling
  • Radiotelephony
  • Morse Code Signalling
  • Distress Signals

MARITIME POLICING OPERATIONS
  • Duties and functions of the Police Coast Guard Officer
  • Weapons Training (M16 & HK-MP5-A4)
  • Marksmanship firing in the Firing Simulator Trainer
  • Coastal Security

KAYAKING COURSE 1 AND 2 STARS

The National Police Cadet Corps (Sea) organises annual 1 and 2 star kayaking mandatory courses for Secondary Two and Three cadets. On successful completion of the 2 star kayaking course the cadets would be awarded a kayaking badge.

Objectives:
To provide individual maritimes skills proficiency.

Duration:
2 Days for 1-Star
2.5 Days for 2-Star

SEA SURVIVAL COURSE

The National Police Cadet Corps (Sea) Unit Secondary One cadets are required to go through the Sea Survival Training course. On successful completion of the course the cadets would be awarded the seamanship bronze badge. On attaining the badge the cadets would be allowed to participate in other sea activities eg; Navigation Sortie and Rafting.

Objectives:
To provide sea survival skills.

Duration:
1 day

NAVIGATION SORTIE

The maritime knowledge and skills which the cadets have acquired during their weekly unit training are further honed through practical sessions conducted during navigational sortie which is conducted once a year for the Secondary Two and Three cadets.

Objectives:
To observe practical navigation on board vessel with consideration for identifying salient features in the harbour like the main buoys, beacons anchorages, islands, shipping activities and border controls by Singapore Maritime agencies.

EDUCATIONAL VISIT TO THE POLICE COAST GUARD

The National Police Cadet Corps (Sea) Unit Secondary Three cadets visit the bases of the Police Coast Guard to observe first-hand the real-life operations, training facilities and equipment used in maritime policing.

Objectives:
  • To allow cadets to foster good ties with the parent body.
  • Understand its function at sea in keeping Singapore a safe and secure place to live.
